This year I grew some peppermint in my garden, so I decided to see exactly what I could do with it other than repel wild rabbits looking to eat free at the Baker's house! Aside from drying out the peppermint leaves for teas or for additions to bath products (salts, m&p soaps, etc), I decided to make this easy, though not quick, peppermint extract. The reason it's not quick is because once combined, it takes 4-6 weeks before it's ready for use. But, if you are not in a hurry, it's a great recipe and there are a variety of uses you will find elsewhere on this site. That said, here is the easy peasy recipe:
- Peppermint Leaves
- Vodka
- Small mason jar or container of your choice
DIRECTIONS:
- Cut several stems of peppermint.
- Remove individual leaves and stuff into your container until its loosely stuffed full.
- Pour your vodka over the leaves.
- Close the lid tightly and store in a dark place for 4-6 weeks, shaking at least once a week or more. I placed my jar on my dryer, so every time I did laundry, it would get some good shakes.
- At the end of the waiting period, open the jar to see if it smells like peppermint or vodka. If it smells like peppermint, strain out the leaves and you have your extract! If it still smells a lot like vodka, close the lid and continue waiting a week or so. Remember to periodically shake the jar. It may take a little longer than you expected, so it's best to use your store-bought extract, if you have pressing need.
